How I use AI In My Brand Design Business
Let's chat about the elephant in the room 🐘 How I use AI in my design business.
AI is a very hot topic right now. It came busting in like the Kool-Aid man and has made no indication it’s leaving anytime soon. Naturally, the rapid implementation of new technologies has made designers extremely nervous, to say the least.
Since one of my values is integrity, it’s important to discuss how I use AI in my business. It’s clear AI is here to stay, and like other disruptions in the industry (computers, Adobe), it’s shaken the landscape. As designers, we can choose ways to incorporate AI into our processes that feel good & efficient, or dig our heels in the ground, resist, and face being obsolete.
Just to be clear, here’s how I absolutely will NOT use AI:
Prompting AI with my client's info and have it spit out logos or graphics
Prompting AI with my client's info and have it develop a brand strategy
I’m no longer (again, transparent even when it’s uncomfortable) using AI to generate copy, blog posts or captions
As a brand designer who promises a high-end brand experience, it's morally wrong for me (or any other designer) to charge the amount we do, to simply paste the client brief into ChatGPT and have it spit out a surface-level brand strategy in 10 minutes.
Here are successful ways I’ve been using AI that feel good and add richness to my work:
After initial research, I ask AI for metaphors & symbolism for keywords I might have missed
Having AI ask me clarifying questions that challenge my direction, or creative
Asking AI to rewrite a headline, or post for improved clarity & flow
I’ve found this to be a balance that adds richness and depth to my workflow, while not relying on AI to do the heavy lifting or taking away from the creative magic my clients are paying for.
AI can be great for research and ideation, but it really fails when it comes to creating connections, and after all, that’s what designers are here for - to create branding and collateral that connects with people above all else.
